Centenario Project Launches in Argentina, Paving Way for Full-Year Output in 2025

Market Faces Price Volatility Despite Strong Demand from China

Eramet, a major French mining group, is targeting up to 13,000 metric tonnes (t) of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) output in 2025. This follows its recent acquisition and activation of the Centenario lithium project in Argentina. The company confirmed that 2024 marked the start of production and expects a steady ramp-up in both volume and quality through 2025.

Eramet’s strategic expansion signals a shift toward stronger involvement in the battery metals sector. With lithium demand forecasted to grow, especially in electric vehicles, the firm’s push into Argentina positions it closer to key supply chains. The Centenario site gives Eramet a foothold in the “Lithium Triangle,” a region critical to global LCE output.

However, market conditions remain volatile. Eramet cited a sharp 68% drop in battery-grade lithium carbonate prices due to a current oversupply, even amid robust Chinese demand. The company acknowledged that it may need to apply price discounts, which will vary depending on product quality. This indicates a cautious approach despite its production goals.

The broader implication is clear: as new players scale up output, price dynamics will increasingly hinge on product differentiation and long-term offtake agreements. Eramet's challenge will be maintaining margin strength while delivering consistent quality in a competitive market.
