MP Materials second magnet plant plans are moving toward Northlake near Fort Worth, Texas. MP Materials second magnet plant planning reflects a push to scale US rare earth magnets fast. As a result, MP Materials second magnet plant discussions now include a “finalist” community process.

MP says it has not made a final site decision yet. However, the company says it will keep working with local stakeholders. Therefore, Northlake’s bid now sits inside a broader domestic manufacturing strategy.

Why Northlake matters for US rare earth magnets

Northlake matters because it sits close to MP’s existing Fort Worth footprint. Meanwhile, proximity can reduce ramp-up friction for labor and suppliers. It can also shorten logistics loops for magnet customers.

MP already runs its Independence facility in Fort Worth for magnet manufacturing. The site currently produces 1,000 tonnes per year of NdFeB magnets. It can expand to 3,000 tonnes per year over time.

What the 10X facility changes for supply chains

The 10X facility changes the scale of US magnet output. Commissioning is expected in 2028. Once operating, MP targets 10,000 tonnes per year of total magnet capacity.

The Defense Department support strengthens the commercial case. MP has a 10-year offtake for NdPr products with a $110 per kilogram price floor. As a result, MP can plan investment around clearer demand and pricing signals.

The Metalnomist Commentary

This project signals a shift from “proof of capability” to “industrial scale” in US magnets. However, execution risk will concentrate around permitting, equipment lead times, and qualified labor. The winners will be the supply chains that lock in feedstock and customers early.
